Information used to run the shop
When you order or contact us, we use the information you provide, such as your name, email address, telephone number, billing and delivery addresses, order details and correspondence. Checkout and hosting services also process technical information needed to operate and protect the website, such as IP address, browser details and transaction information.
Required checkout information is needed to process and deliver an order. If you do not provide it, we may be unable to complete the purchase. Please do not send payment-card details or unnecessary sensitive information by email.
Why we use it
- Orders and enquiries: to take steps you request before a purchase, process payments, deliver orders and handle returns. Our basis is performance of a contract or steps before a contract.
- Records required by law: to meet applicable tax, accounting and other legal duties. Our basis is legal obligation.
- Operating the business: to answer other enquiries, investigate problems, prevent misuse and protect our legal rights. Our basis is our legitimate interest in running and protecting the shop, balanced against your rights.
Business contact and trade introductions
We research relevant incorporated businesses, such as cheesemakers, ingredient suppliers, shops and workshop providers, to introduce Meito’s 1g rennet for potential trade supply. We use business contact information published on official business websites and public company information, including Companies House records, to check the organisation and its status. Information may include an organisation’s name, business email address, a published contact name or role, website, company details and notes about the relevance of our product.
Our lawful basis, where this is personal information, is our legitimate interest in developing relevant trade relationships through limited business introductions. We consider business relevance and recipients’ reasonable expectations, and respect objections. We do not treat a publicly available email address as consent.
Our business team oversees AI-assisted research and contact selection. Authorised business operators, our AI-assistance provider and business email services may process the information needed for research, drafting, sending and keeping contact records. We do not reuse customer order data for this prospecting campaign.
Our campaign is limited to five first contacts a day. We may send one follow-up to an unanswered introduction, no earlier than seven business days later. Receiving an introduction does not enrol you in a newsletter. These outreach emails do not use open-tracking pixels.
We record contact attempts, replies, bounces and opt-outs to manage the conversation and avoid unwanted repeat contact. Tell us if you want to know which public source was used for your contact details.
You can stop this marketing at any time. Reply to the message or email info@meitocheese.com. We suppress opted-out and bounced addresses from further outreach. A limited suppression record is kept so your choice is respected when new contacts are researched.
Newsletter subscriptions
If you choose to subscribe to our newsletter, we use your email address to send product news and updates on the basis of your consent. Hostinger Reach supports the subscription service. You can withdraw your consent using the unsubscribe link in a newsletter or by emailing info@meitocheese.com. A trade introduction does not subscribe you to the newsletter.
Service providers and other recipients
The store runs on WordPress and WooCommerce with Hostinger hosting. WooPayments and Stripe support payment processing, and Jetpack/Automattic supports connected store services. Relevant information is used by those providers to deliver their services. Delivery providers receive the information needed to get orders to you; professional advisers and authorities may receive information where needed for accounting, legal duties or claims.
Payment details entered into the provider’s checkout fields are processed by that payment provider. We receive order and payment-status information. Provider roles and their own uses of information are explained in the Stripe privacy policy, Automattic privacy policy and Hostinger privacy policy.
If you follow an Amazon, eBay or other external link, that website handles information under its own privacy arrangements.
International processing
Our providers operate internationally, so information may be processed outside the UK. Stripe’s privacy information describes transfers including to the United States and India and the safeguards it uses. Automattic describes contractual safeguards for transfers outside the UK, and Hostinger describes safeguards for its international hosting and service operations. The provider notices above explain these arrangements; contact us if you need information about safeguards relevant to your data. Business contact research may also be handled by our AI-assistance and email providers outside the UK; you can ask us about the providers and safeguards relevant to that processing.
How long information is kept
We assess retention according to the purpose: completing and supporting an order, dealing with returns or disputes, meeting tax and accounting requirements, and retaining evidence for applicable legal claims. Enquiries are retained while they are needed to resolve the issue and relevant follow-up. A request to delete information may not remove records we must keep by law or need for legal claims.
For trade prospecting, retention is assessed against the time needed to check relevance, complete the initial introduction and permitted follow-up, handle responses, resolve complaints and maintain evidence of our choices. We retain the minimum suppression information needed to avoid contacting people who opted out or whose addresses bounced. We do not treat this as a reason to keep an unnecessary full prospect profile indefinitely.
Cookies and site statistics
Cookies and similar technology support functions such as the basket, checkout and account sessions. Your browser lets you manage or delete cookies; blocking necessary cookies can prevent these functions from working.
The site also loads Automattic/Jetpack statistics and WooCommerce analytics components. These measure website and store activity, including page or product visits and interaction with the basket and checkout. Depending on the feature, information can include a visited or referring page, event time, IP address and browser details. This is separate from the absence of open-tracking pixels in our trade emails.
Automattic explains its handling of visitor information in its privacy notice for visitors and its Jetpack privacy information. Browser cookie settings may not block every form of activity measurement.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you can request access, correction, deletion, restriction or transfer of your information. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you can withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. Contact us using the details above.
You can object to direct marketing at any time. Tell us at info@meitocheese.com if you do not want marketing contact.
You can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office through ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. You may contact us first so we can try to resolve your concern, but you do not have to.
